Crib Mattress Safety

If you’re planning to purchase a mattress for a baby’s crib, make sure it meets the newly adopted ASTM safety standard designed so that mattresses fit properly within the crib. The new safety measure, which standardizes the size, shape and fit of crib mattresses, and sets an objective means for measuring the size, seeks to eliminate gaps between the mattress and the crib. The goal is to reduce the opportunities for babies to become trapped or suffocate.

The new standard also calls for a warning label to advise consumers on how to make sure their crib mattress properly fits within a crib, and warnings to help prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Since babies can’t move themselves out of positions where their faces sink into the mattress if they flip onto their tummies, the Better Sleep Council suggests that your baby’s crib mattress provides a firm, solid sleep surface.
